    A Service Science Perspective on the Role of ICT in Service Innovation

    Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is often considered the main enabler of service innovation. The unique role of ICT in service innovation, however, is not fully understood and advancing knowledge in this area emerged as the top research priority in the fields of service science and information systems research. To date, substantial insights regarding the role of ICT in service innovation are not available, and new theoretical lenses and perspectives are needed to develop these. In this conceptual paper, we define service innovation as service system reconfiguration, which allows us to classify the role of ICT in this process more succinctly and ultimately overcome the shortcomings in the existing body of literature. Specifically, we deconstruct and extend previous views of ICT as a “black box” in service innovation research, and focus on the actual innovation process and its mechanisms. We define and delineate these as resource shifting and resource access, explain the role of ICTs in each, and outline further research opportunities that result from these new insights

    Perspective: Technology Management in the Service Sector

    This paper reports out of the symposium on \u27Technology Management in the Service Sector\u27 which was held as a part of Portland International Conference on Management of Engineering and Technology in 2007. The objectives of the symposium were: to explore how technology management research and education can contribute to the evolving field of services science, management and engineering; to define a research agenda for the field of engineering and technology management that addresses the critical needs of the evolving service economy and to discuss needed funding structures and programs to foster service oriented research. We tackled these issues in two ways. First, the key leaders from academia, industry and government presented the critical issues and challenges that presently exist. Then, small groups analysed the selected topics in depth. We identified three main components of service science: value, people and technology, and explored how researchers in the field of technology management would tackle this new phenomenon

    Railway wheel tread damage and axle bending stress – Instrumented wheelset measurements and numerical simulations

    A combination of instrumented wheelset measurements and numerical simulations of axle bending stresses is used to investigate the consequences of evolving rolling contact fatigue (RCF) damage on a passenger train wheelset. In a field test campaign, stresses have been monitored using a wheelset with four strain gauges mounted on the axle, while the evolution of wheel tread damage (out-of-roundness) has been measured on regular occasions. The strain signals are post-processed in real time and stress variations are computed. Based on a convolution integral approach, the measured wheel out-of-roundness has been used as input to numerical simulations of vertical dynamic wheelset–track interaction and axle stresses. Simulated and measured axle stresses are compared for cases involving combinations of low or high levels of rail roughness and the measured levels of RCF damage. The study enhances the understanding of how wheel tread damage and track quality influence axle stress amplitudes

    Data-Driven Understanding of Smart Service Systems Through Text Mining

    Smart service systems are everywhere, in homes and in the transportation, energy, and healthcare sectors. However, such systems have yet to be fully understood in the literature. Given the widespread applications of and research on smart service systems, we used text mining to develop a unified understanding of such systems in a data-driven way. Specifically, we used a combination of metrics and machine learning algorithms to preprocess and analyze text data related to smart service systems, including text from the scientific literature and news articles. By analyzing 5,378 scientific articles and 1,234 news articles, we identify important keywords, 16 research topics, 4 technology factors, and 13 application areas. We define ???smart service system??? based on the analytics results. Furthermore, we discuss the theoretical and methodological implications of our work, such as the 5Cs (connection, collection, computation, and communications for co-creation) of smart service systems and the text mining approach to understand service research topics. We believe this work, which aims to establish common ground for understanding these systems across multiple disciplinary perspectives, will encourage further research and development of modern service systems

    Tantalum nanoparticles enhance the osteoinductivity of multiscale composites based on poly(lactide-co-glycolide) electrospun fibers embedded in a gelatin hydrogel

    Bioresorbable polymeric materials have risen great interest as implants for bone tissue regeneration, since they show substantial advantages with respect to conventional metal devices, including biodegradability, flexibility, and the possibility to be easily modified to introduce specific functionalities. In the present work, an innovative nanocomposite scaffold, properly designed to show biomimetic and osteoinductive properties for potential application in bone tissue engineering, was developed. The scaffold is characterized by a multi-layer structure, completely different with respect to the so far employed polymeric implants, consisting in a poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide)/polyethylene glycol electrospun nanofibrous mat sandwiched between two hydrogel gelatin layers enriched with tantalum nanoparticles (NPs). The composition of the electrospun fibers, containing 10 wt% of polyethylene glycol, was selected to ensure a proper integration of the fibers in the gel phase, essential to endow the composite with flexibility and to prevent delamination between the layers. The scaffold maintained its structural integrity after six weeks of soaking in physiological solutions, albeit the gelatin phase was partially released. The combined use of gelatin, bioresorbable electrospun fibers and tantalum NPs endows the final device with biomimetic and osteoinductive properties. Indeed, results of the in vitro tests demonstrate that the obtained scaffolds clearly represent a favorable milieu for normal human bone-marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells viability and osteoblastic differentiation; moreover, inclusion of tantalum NPs in the scaffold improves cell performance with particular regard to early and late markers of osteoblastic differentiation.     SIRT1 activity in peripheral blood mononuclear cells correlates with altered lung function in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

    Background. Oxidative stress is a recognized pathogenic mechanism in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Expression of the NAD+-dependent deacetylase Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), an antiaging molecule with a key role in oxidative stress response, has been described as decreased in the lung of COPD patients. No studies so far investigated whether systemic SIRT1 activity was associated to decreased lung function in this disease. Methods. We measured SIRT1 protein expression and activity in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and total oxidative status (TOS), total antioxidant capacity (TEAC), and oxidative stress index (TOS/TEAC) in the plasma of 25 COPD patients, 20 healthy nonsmokers (HnS), and 20 healthy smokers (HS). Results. The activity of SIRT1 was significantly lower in COPD patients compared to both control groups while protein expression decreased progressively (HnS > HS > COPD). TOS levels were significantly lower in HnS than in smoke-associated subjects (COPD and HS), while TEAC levels were progressively lower according (HnS > HS > COPD). In COPD patients, SIRT1 activity, but not protein levels, correlated significantly with both lung function parameters (FEV1/FVC and FEV1) and TEAC. Conclusions. These findings suggest loss of SIRT1-driven antioxidant activity as relevant in COPD pathogenesis and identify SIRT1 activity as a potential convenient biomarker for identification of mild/moderate, stable COPD

    Ontological representation and governance of business semantics in compliant service networks

    The Internet would enable new ways for service innovation and trading, as well as for analysing the resulting value networks, with an unprecedented level of scale and dynamics. Yet most related economic activities remain of a largely brittle and manual nature. Service-oriented business implementations focus on operational aspects at the cost of value creation aspects such as quality and regulatory compliance. Indeed they enforce how to carry out a certain business in a prefixed non-adaptive manner rather than capturing the semantics of a business domain in a way that would enable service systems to adapt their role in changing value propositions. In this paper we set requirements for SDL-compliant business service semantics, and propose a method for their ontological representation and governance. We demonstrate an implementation of our approach in the context of service-oriented Information Governance
